President's Message "Health Information Management Transition" November 09, 2009

A major national report was released last week at the Canada Health Infoway Fall Partnership Conference. A study was done which outlines the increasing need for Health Informatics (HI) and Health Information Management (HIM) Professionals with enhanced skill sets and experience in the next fiveyears.The development and deployment of electronic health information systems (EHIS) in Canada is potentially compromised by the skills and labour shortages in Canadian health informatics and health information health management. This study |
makes recommendations about the need to monitor EHIS requirements for skilled professionals and the need to develop strategies to address both the labour and skills demands. This sector study was commissioned by the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA), COACH, Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC), ITAC Health: the Health Division of the Information Technology Association of Canada – Health, and Canada Health Infoway. Sandra Cotton from CHIMA has written a report about the need for HIM Professionals to further educate themselves to meet the requirements talked about in this study. She points out skills we need and the different pathways we may decide to pursue. This report will be posted on the CHIMA and SHIMA websites.
